Micarta FR5 Machining Parts

FR5 Glass-Cloth Reinforced Epoxy

Meets MIL-I-24768/11 Type GEB.

What is FR-5 Material?

FR-5 is the Brominated flame retardant version of G-11. FR-5 material can usually be used where G-11 material is specified; however G-11 Laminate should not be used where FR-5 is specified.

Brominated epoxy resin systems used in FR-4 and FR-5 materials were originally created to stop or retard potential fire hazards caused by overheating or electrical failure resulting in arcing. FR-4 and FR-5 materials came into existence, and are used primarily for printed circuit boards.

In 1998 NEMA updated their standards to differentiate G-10 and G-11 from FR-4 and FR-5. This update specifically excludes the use of bromine or other halogen flame retardants in the production of G-10 or G-11.

What is FR-5 Laminate?

FR-5 is rated at 300 degree F continuous operating temperature, and has retention of 50% of mechanical properties at 300 degrees or 150 C. Because of these characteristics, this material should be used in applications where temperatures in excess of 125 degrees C are encountered. As a thermoset, no melting will occur with this grade, however charring will be observed after extended periods above this temperature rating.

FR-5 is also known as the high temperature version of FR-4 epoxy laminate. FR-5 laminate uses multiple layers of woven glass cloth impregnated with an epoxy resin system for increased mechanical stability and heat resistance.

FR-5 has a UL flammability rating of 94 V-0.
